BIA Cost Benefit Analysis a Good Move

The New Zealand Building Industry Federation (BIF) and the New Zealand Forest Industries Council (NZFIC) today welcomed the decision of the Building Industry Authority (BIA) to undertake a cost benefit analysis of possible recommendations regarding the use of treated timber in house construction.

“This is a good move” said NZFIC Chief Executive Stephen Jacobi. “It shows that account is being taken of the industry’s concern about the potential impact of the BIA proposals to move toward a greater use of treated timber.”

BIF Chairman Richard Carver said the industry was not opposed to the use of treated timber where the circumstances warranted it.

“It makes no sense to require timber treatment in all cases as this will needlessly put up costs without addressing the real causes of the weathertightness problem.”

The industry will work actively with the BIA on the cost benefit analysis.
