Tyco Electronics Opens State-Of-The-Art Manufacturing Facility

New purpose-built 55,000 sq ft facility in Heathcote, Christchurch offers room for expansion and signifies continued investment in and commitment to New Zealand by Tyco Electronics.

Tyco Electronics is pleased to announce the opening of a brand new NZ$3 million manufacturing facility based in Christchurch's new green-field industrial estate in Mary Muller Drive, Heathcote. The facility opened yesterday in celebration of a significant milestone achievement for the organisation in New Zealand.

Christchurch General Manager, Mike Carey, says that Tyco had long outgrown the previous aging buildings in Cashel Street.

"We were on Cashel Street for 20 years - expanding into neighbouring buildings as they became available. But the old buildings were not designed to house the type of machinery we have."

"Starting from scratch with a new purpose-built facility meant that we can have specially designed areas that reduce all the inconveniences staff used to have to put up with, such as machinery noise, smells, dirt, vibrations and dust," says Mr Carey.

Having staff under one roof also makes it much easier to locate people instead of having to trek through the former maze of adjoining buildings, and across roads and yards.

"We chose the location of the site according to where the vast majority of our staff live," explains Mr Carey. "As it is situated right on the corner of Christchurch's new ring-roading, it is easy to get to for most of our staff. It is also a great facility to work in with a big new cafeteria, outdoor courtyard for barbecues and a choice of 90 car parks."

The modern facility signifies continued investment in and commitment to New Zealand by Tyco Electronics.

Chris Bran, General Manager of the Australia and New Zealand GIC and Automative Business units of Tyco Electronics explains that the new 55,000ft2 facility is the direct result of the tremendous achievement of Tyco Electronics Christchurch plant.

"In recent months, business in the electronics industry in Christchurch has been exceptionally strong, and we are fortunate to be benefiting from the phenomenal success of some of the country's top electronics exporters including Dynamic Controls, Fisher & Paykel, BJ Cocksedge, Navman, Trimble, Electrolux, Invensys and others," says Mr Bran.

"Currently our mainstay products are the harnesses and components that go into many of these successful exports, from wheelchair controllers, to whitegoods and climate controls."

"Already at 160 staff, we anticipate extending opportunities for this modern plant that could possibly see our direct staff increase by another 100 within the next 12 months," predicts Mr Bran.
