NZAS Aluminium Now Backed with Bronze
New Zealand Aluminium Smelters (NZAS) is proud to be one of only three companies recognised in the New Zealand Business Excellence Awards 2003 with a Bronze Level Commendation.
"The New Zealand Business Excellence Foundation (NZBEF) award is the culmination of many years of quality work by the team at the Tiwai Point smelter and recognises that NZAS is a New Zealand business of excellence," said NZAS General Manager Operations, Tom Campbell.
"The smelter's vision to be world-class in the judgment of every stakeholder has obvious synergies with NZBEF's mission to stimulate and support business excellence in New Zealand."
The NZBEF assesses entrants across a wide range of criteria including organisational leadership, social responsibility, customer focused results, employee learning and motivation, and financial results. The awards are benchmarked with the internationally renowned Baldrige framework.
"At NZAS we recognise that competitiveness and future success depends not only on the economic benefit we generate and the quality of our product but also upon our record as good neighbours and partners with the community that sustains us.
"NZAS produces the highest purity aluminium of any smelter, generates approximately $1 billion of exports per annum, provides 1000 jobs in Southland and contributes $3.65 billion economic benefit to New Zealand per annum.
"NZAS is playing an active role in meeting New Zealand's Kyoto commitments and is actively pursuing ways to be part of the solution to New Zealand's energy shortage.
"Commitment to the health and safety of our employees is an integral part of the NZAS culture. In 2003, NZAS was the first Australasian Winner of the Rio Tinto CEO Safety Award, from 80 sites worldwide.
"I am immensely proud of the team effort that ensures that NZAS remains an integral part of the New Zealand economy," Mr Campbell concluded.
NZAS is a
joint venture owned by Comalco Limited (79.36 per cent) and
Japan's Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd (20.64%).
