Smoking Ban in Bars must re reconsidered

“The Ministry of Health decision to discontinue lobbying contracts with the anti-smoking lobby vindicates Hospitality Association calls for the Smoke-free Environments (Enhanced Protection) Amendment Bill to be reconsidered,” said Mr Robertson, Chief Executive of the Hospitality Association.

Democracy in New Zealand demands a transparent process. Government funding of the anti-smoking lobby has clouded the transparency of the Select Committee consideration. The members of the Select Committee have not had the opportunity to weigh and judge public opinion in a fair and balanced way. Instead, the Select Committee has considered the so-called views of New Zealanders which seem to be a reflection of Ministry of Health views.

The Bill must be referred to the Select Committee for transparent consideration. The public can have no faith and no respect for the proposed ban on smoking in bars and restaurants unless this occurs.

Mr Robertson said Parliament must take the opportunity they have to restore public faith in the democratic process by sending it back to the Select Committee.
