800 Isuzu Bighorn and Wizard vehicles in recall

MEDIA RELEASE

4 February 2005

800 Isuzu Bighorn and Wizard vehicles in recall

Owners of Isuzu Bighorn and Wizard three-litre 4WD vehicles recalled for injector problems will receive the replacement parts free, as a result of representations and efforts made by the Independent Motor Vehicle Dealers Association (IMVDA).

IMVDA Chief Executive, David Vinsen, said more than 800 vehicles in New Zealand are at risk of compression ignition.

“Compression ignition makes it physically impossible to stop the motor running. The motor builds up speed until it eventually blows. If the car is in motion it will start going faster and faster, and the only way to stop the car is to put the gear in neutral and coast to the side of the road.

“This may present a problem to an inexperienced driver because trying to brake will not work,” said Vinsen.

After Holden New Zealand recently declined to address the recall, IMVDA contacted Isuzu Japan directly for discussions.

IMVDA provided Isuzu Japan with the chassis numbers and details of approximately 800 affected vehicles registered in New Zealand.

As a result, Isuzu Japan has supplied the necessary parts free of charge to owners of the recalled vehicles.

IMVDA has just received the components required to complete the work and owners of affected vehicles will be advised in the next few weeks where they can take their cars for repair.

Meanwhile, IMVDA is discussing with Holden New Zealand the logistics of the Holden dealer network carrying out this work.

The replacement parts will be supplied free, and the customer will only have to pay for the labour costs for fitting.

The recall directly affects seals for the injector system. If the seals fail, diesel fuel feeds into the engine and travels down into the sump.

Once the level of oil and diesel mix in the sump reaches the breather it is sucked into the combustion chamber, causing compression ignition.

Fitting the replacement parts will ensure that the potential problem is remedied.
