Aluminium workers to walk off the job

Work at National Aluminium in Hamilton will grind to a halt on Friday when nearly the entire workforce walks off the job.

The workers want a five per cent pay rise, but the company is offering four per cent.

Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union national secretary Andrew Little said that the company had presented no evidence that it could not afford to pay five per cent.

“The only conclusion we can draw is that they just don’t want to,” he said.

“Workers up and down the country are getting five per cent rises because most employers recognise that it is fair in the current climate, and these workers should get it too.”

Eighty-seven workers will walk off the job for 24 hours at 6am on Friday. They will picket the Maui St, Te Rapa, plant. The company makes aluminium extrusions.
