Zero pay rise leads to strike

One hundred and twenty workers at a beef jerky plant who haven’t had a pay rise in three years are on strike today.

Workers at the American-owned Jack Links plant in Mangere, Auckland, are picketing the site this morning.

Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union national secretary Andrew Little said that the workers were seeking a five per cent pay rise, but the company was not offering any rise.

“These people are on around $12.50 an hour and haven’t had a pay rise in three years,” he said.

“They’re seeking a modest five per cent rise, but the company is offering them nothing. It’s no wonder they are angry.”

The strike began at 6am today and will run for 24 hours.
