Classy DVNZ Reds Take Gold in New World Awards

Classy DVNZ Reds Take Gold in New World Wine Awards 2005

Three Distinguished Vineyards New Zealand (DVNZ) wines took gold medals and proved themselves as the best of the best reds for 2005.

Knappstein Clare Valley Shiraz 2002, Preece Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 and Preece Merlot 2003 all won gold medals in the New World Wine Awards 2005, which is now in its third year.

“These Awards show you don’t need to pay top prices to sample world class wines and the most expensive doesn’t always mean the best,” says Dave Yurak, Competition Convener.

“The competition aims to provide customers with the opportunity to purchase wines for under $20 and each wine entered in the competition must be in this price bracket,” Dave explains.

An expert panel of judges, headed by wine writer Michael Cooper, spent two days blind tasting and evaluating over 800 international wines. Each wine was judged solely on its merit and price was not a consideration.

Wines distributed by DVNZ had outstanding results in the recent competition.

The gold-winning Knappstein Clare Valley Shiraz 2002 is bursting with plum and black pepper flavours, is concentrated and structured and, according to the judges, is as good as many wines twice its price.

A gold medal was also won by Preece Cabernet Sauvignon, described by one of the judges as “a distinctly classy Victorian red with fresh red berry, herb, spice and nutty oak flavours, smooth and rich.”

A third gold was won by the Preece Merlot 2003. Competition judges described it as follows: “Dark, fragrant and generous, it possesses layers of plumy, spicy, nutty flavours.”

The philosophy surrounding the DVNZ portfolio is to build a federation of regionally distinctive premium wineries that complement and support each other.

“DVNZ aims to be best-in-class for fine wine distribution in New Zealand and we are very proud of the wineries we represent,” says Jonathon Hesketh, General Manager DVNZ.
