Radio New Zealand staff are on strike again – and say that latest figures show that their five per cent pay claim is reasonable.
Members of the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union and the Public Service Association walked off the job at the state broadcaster at 4pm today and won’t return until 6pm. It is their fourth strike since July 29.
EPMU national secretary Andrew Little said that the Labour Cost Index, released today by Statistics New Zealand, showed that the average public sector pay rise in the June quarter was 5.3 per cent.
“These people are seeking a five per cent pay rise, which is in line with what other workers are getting, and rather modest considering that they are paid less than most other workers in the media industry,” he said.
Radio New Zealand has offered a three per cent rise.
Today’s action is expected to take the Checkpoint programme off the air.
