George Skimming Appointed To The Board Of Building Research

Building Research has announced the appointment of Mr George Skimming to their Board, effective immediately. Mr Skimming has been elected to the Board as a representative of Local Government New Zealand.

Mr Skimming is the Director, Building Consents and Licensing Services for the Wellington City Council, based in the Council’s operations centre on Wakefield Street in Wellington’s Central Business District.

Chairman of the Building Research Board Mr Stuart Kendon said “we are delighted to have secured the services of George as a director. George is an experienced senior manager with knowledge of both private and public sectors. George also has significant practical experience in the building industry, which is of huge benefit to us”.

Mr Skimming, who has been in his current role with the Council since 2003, has held a number of different positions within the Council since 1974. His previous roles have included Manager of Environmental Control Business and Manager of the Council’s Building Division.

He has a certificate in carpentry from the Wellington Polytechnic and a diploma in advanced management, and began his career with the Council as a building inspector, before becoming chief building inspector in 1979, a role he held for 11 years. George has also worked as a building site overseer and carpenter.

As Director of Building and Licensing Services, George is responsible for a team of 120 people. His responsibilities include management of the Council’s team of Building Inspectors, to ensure Building Code compliance. This department also looks after building consent applications, code compliance certificates and building warrants of fitness.

George lives in Miramar and in his spare time he enjoys watching all types of sports, reading, gardening, and woodwork and is interested in furniture design.

George comes onto the Board in the place of Don Binney, who is stepping down. A number of directors are going to be appointed in near future; more information regarding these appointments will follow.
