Aged Care workers to strike again

24hour strike to hit Guardian Health Group

Tomorrow Guardian Healthcare Limited staff around the country will walk off the job on strike for 24hours, from 7am Thursday until 7am Friday, in the second round of strike action in a week.

Over 500 staff, members of the Service and Food Workers Union (SFWU) and the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO), will join the action at homes in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington and Christchurch.

Strike action is confirmed after the employer refused to make a new offer and cancelled negotiations scheduled for next week.

The 24-hour strike follows a six-hour strike on Friday last week, and will again affect GHG homes around the country.

“GHG is hiding behind the under-funding of the sector while at the same time happily pumping millions of dollars into its acquisitions and growth.” said NZNO Organiser Jane Kostanich.

“GHG is the classic foreign-controlled corporation that wants to blame everybody and take no responsibility for the low pay of the staff who care for hundreds of elderly New Zealanders.” Ms Kostanich said.

“We saw the strength of support the community has for these workers when we rallied in Aotea Square last week. GHG won’t show support for their own aged care employees by giving them a decent pay rise” Ms Kostanich said.
