ISPANZ Encouraged by Regulated Broadband Announcement
The Internet Service Providers Association of New Zealand (ISPANZ) say that they are pleased with yesterday's announcement from the Commerce Commissioner about broadband regulation.
"Provided the Commissioner doesn't back down before the final determination this will be a step forward for broadband in New Zealand," says ISPANZ president David Diprose.
"We're glad to see that the Commissioner has confirmed that Telecom will be required to make a full speed broadband product at a single wholesale price available to ISPs," says Diprose. On a cautionary note he said: "The minister has set a target of $1 a day for broadband in New Zealand, however it's hard to see how the initial wholesale cost of $26.57 + GST per month for the access component will make this achievable".
ISPANZ also have a serious concern with an inherent design flaw in the regulated service as requested by TelstraClear.
"During busy network periods customers using this service will only be able to get speeds significantly slower than dial up," says Diprose. "ISPANZ members will be approaching Telecom asking for a regulated service but without the serious performance restrictions during busy times".
