Plastics workers strike over pay
A North Shore plastics company’s refusal to pay the going rate has prompted workers to walk out the door.
Fifty-six workers from O’Brien Plastics in Glenfield are on strike because the company is refusing to give them the industry-standard pay rise of a five per cent pay rise now, with another 3.5 per cent to four per cent (depending on inflation) in 15 months’ time.
Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union national secretary Andrew Little said that company had been part of the Plastics Industry multi-employer collective agreement for years, and workers didn’t want to be cut out of the agreement.
Mr Little said that the workers would meet again at 7am tomorrow (Thursday) to discuss the situation.
O’Brien Plastics is owned by HPM NZ Ltd. It manufactures electrical components, including farm equipment. The plant is at 10 Target Court, Glenfield.
