Genesis Energy’s gas turbine has landed
The core of Genesis Energy’s new 385MW combined cycle gas turbine power station – the gas turbine – arrived in Auckland last night from Japan aboard the freighter Pangani.
The 372 tonne gas turbine will be lifted from the hold of the ship on Tuesday 8 November and secured on a 16 axle trailer before leaving the Ports of Auckland on Sunday 13 December for its five night journey to Huntly. The new trailer was imported to New Zealand by Tranzcarr Heavy Haulage for this job.
Also traveling with the gas turbine will be a 179 tonne low pressure turbine. This unit will be carried on a separate 13 axle trailer. The new power station’s 355 tonne generator and 98 tonne High Pressure – Intermediate Pressure Turbine will be transported to Huntly later this month. The four units were built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan.
The transport of the gas turbine will be one of the largest heavy loads to be moved over such a distance in New Zealand. The turbine is not only extremely heavy but is almost 14m long, 6m tall and 6m wide.
Genesis Energy and its engineer Connell Wagner and contractors have expended considerable resources into preparing the heavy haulage route from the Ports of Auckland to Huntly Power Station.
