SkyCity puts pressure on its union members because they dare to ask for more

The Service and Food Workers Union believes SkyCity has been putting pressure on its staff to resign from the SFWU as a result of a breakdown of their CEA negotiations.

It has resulted in a small number of resignations on a standard template where the employee writes in their name and signs the form. They have then been faxed to the Union from SkyCity Administration office which staff (other than management and supervisors) are unauthorised to access.

Now part time Union members have had their hours cut, some from 40 hours to 8 hours a week with only 48 hours notice. SkyCity have justified this on the basis that it is because of “declining visitations”. This is in direct conflict with the fact that this is the busiest time of year for SkyCity and that this short notice reduction in hours of Union members overrode planned and existing rosters of the staff affected.

“In my opinion this sort of pressure diverts parties away from addressing the real issues. In SkyCity’s case that is current wage rates as low as $10.10 and a wage increase of 2% or 4.5% with the fish hook of a 2 year term and flexible hours” said Shane Vugler
