Business Roundtable Welcomes Carbon Tax Decision
"The government is to be complimented on its willingness to review its carbon tax policy", Rob McLeod, the chairman of the New Zealand Business Roundtable, said today. "New Zealand First and United Future also deserve credit for their role in this decision.
"The 2001 Tax Review which I chaired did not support unilateral action by New Zealand on climate change or the early introduction of a carbon tax.
"The decision clears the way for further reconsideration of New Zealand's approach to global warming. We do not support the idea of a more targeted tax, since this would still have negative economic consequences. The Business Roundtable favours an approach more aligned to that of its key trading partners the United States and Australia", Mr McLeod concluded.
