Strong Retail Sales And Accommodation Data Points To A Buoyant Wellington Economy
Retail sales figures released today by Statistics New Zealand show economic activity in the Wellington region remains robust according to Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce. The figures follow the release of good accommodation data earlier in the week.
“Retail sales in the Wellington Region for the month of May 2006 were 9.7% higher than the same time last year. The New Zealand total grew 6.3% over the same period,” said Chief Executive Charles Finny.
“The sales trend for the Wellington region continues to grow at a steady rate with an average monthly increase of 0.6% over the past 12 months.
“Earlier in the week Statistics New Zealand released accommodation data for May 2006. This showed the Wellington region topped the country in terms of occupancy rates (52%) and growth in number of guest nights (up 7% on May 2005 and 6% year on year).
“These figures show that the Wellington region continues to perform well economically in spite of the slowdown in the national economy”, Mr Finny concluded.
