Spray smarter – not harder!

New battery powered sprayers – Spray smarter – not harder!

Elderly and disabled gardeners are finding that garden spraying is back within their reach, thanks to the recent release of rechargeable battery powered sprayers. The sprayers save hours of time and effort because no heavy hand pumping is required; a light touch on the trigger is all that's needed to turn a tedious job into a much more enjoyable experience.

The Ezspray units have brought positive comments from numerous Greypower members who find the units are easy to use, helping them to regain control of their own gardens. The simple trigger mechanism is also finding favour with people with limited hand use, such as arthritics, who can no longer manage the pump action required for the operation of regular sprayers.

Kerikeri's Terry Frost, a former roof sprayer and his wife Odette, a former commercial grower, have developed the unique rechargeable battery powered sprayers as a solution to problems Odette experienced from the repetitive action of pumping her own spray unit.

"I was beginning to experience aches and pains in my arm with having to hand pump and I realized my own business was under threat" she said. "There were no suitable alternatives available in New Zealand so we thought about what I needed and then Terry started sourcing solutions offshore.”

"They say necessity is the mother of invention and that's about how it was in Odette’s case" says Terry.

On a limited budget, fortified by sheer grit and determination, Terry eventually found what was needed and with some modifications they were the perfect solution. The 5, 8, 15 and 18-litre units are now manufactured in Asia and they are proving invaluable for a range of uses – including gardening, horticulture and commercial uses such as carpet/upholstery cleaning and pest control.

"It's great that the units are suited to business and domestic use," Terry said. "But our biggest pleasure has been the comments we have received from elderly and disabled people who are so pleased that they are able to take a more active role in caring for their gardens. Developing the Ezsprayers has been a long and costly process, but this kind of feedback makes it all worthwhile."

The units are easy to charge – they plug in to any standard outlet and the 8 and 15-litre units can also be charged on a car charger. One full charge allows a minimum of 10 tankfuls on the 5, 8 and 18-litre sprayers while the 15-litre allows a minimum of 5 tankfuls.

Each battery lasts for about 300 full charges or 1000 top-up charges.
The units are of hardy plastic and stainless steel construction with handles, shoulder or backpack straps.
