Take the guess work out of sun safety

Take the guess work out of sun safety

Solar Safe wristbands, a revolutionary new sun safety product now available in time for Summer

Summer is on the way and temperatures in New Zealand will once again be soaring; along with the UV index. But how do you know when you’ve had enough sun or need to re-apply your sun block?

The new UV sun monitor wristband from SolarSafe is the best way to keep you and your family protected from harmful UV rays. SolarSafe is a waterproof band that changes colour to tell you when to reapply sun block and when you have had enough sun. The ingenious yet simple wristband gives you peace of mind and takes the guesswork out of sun safety.

Most of us are aware of the slip, slap, slop and wrap routine but re-application is our short coming – and at a great cost! Until now there has been no precise way of knowing when you are putting yourself at risk and as a nation that enjoys the outdoor life and summers filled with beach trips, sport, BBQ’s and outside entertaining this is something we need to seriously address.

In New Zealand alone, there are an estimated 67,000 or more new cases of skin cancer and over 300 deaths each year, the majority of which could have been avoided if preventative measures had been taken. With a UV exposure level 55% higher than the UK and most of Australia it is not surprising that the World Health Organisation (WHO) states in their latest report that NZ women have the highest chance worldwide of getting skin cancer and NZ men are second only to Australian males. Make the most of this summer and don’t take unnecessary risks, use SolarSafe to keep your family safe and have fun in the sun. ENDS

Background Information

SolarSafe is a new and patented UV Sun Monitor Wristband. Developed by SolarSafe Ltd. and a leading UV research team, SolarSafe enables you to see, at a glance, your family’s exposure to harmful UV radiation. SolarSafe also acts as an ID band in case you and your child become separated.

SolarSafe was tested by the Skin & Cancer Foundation Australia and was launched in the UK in April 2005, has now gained worldwide market interest including Australia, America, Malta, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Denmark and now New Zealand.

It is very easy to use and provides a practical way of monitoring ones exposure to harmful broad spectrum UV rays. The wristband, technically known as a dosimeter, is calibrated to change colour at pre decided levels of UV exposure. The intermediate colour change is calibrated to warn when to reapply sunscreen and the final colour change warns the wearer that they are about to reach their MED which is the amount of sun that causes the skin to redden and burn. The band is also calibrated to be used with sunscreen and if applied to the wristband in the same way as applied to the skin, it allows the band to mirror the skin’s protection from UV rays. The higher the SPF of the sunscreen, the longer it takes the band to go through its three colour changes.

SolarSafe is sensitive to both UVA and UVB rays. The UVB rays mainly affect the outer layers of the skin and are mostly responsible for causing of sunburn. Compared to UVA, they consist of shorter wavelengths and are mostly absorbed by the epidermis, or the outermost layer of skin. In contrast, UVA rays consist of longer wavelengths than UVB rays and penetrate deeply into the skin, triggering the production of melanin, the pigment that causes the skin to tan. Therefore, SolarSafe is a very important tool in not only guarding against sunburn but also in guarding against long-term skin damage and premature aging.

SolarSafe wristbands are available online at www.solarsafe.co.nz or by calling 0800 294 294 and cost $15.95 + $3.95 postage and packaging for a pack of seven bands. Retailers will be announced as they come on board and the bands can be customised for key partners – sponsorship enquiries are welcome.
