NZ Super Fund Responsible Investment Welcomed

Press Release: available for immediate release

NZ Super Fund Responsible Investment Appointment Welcomed

The New Zealand Superannuation Fund’s appointment of Anne-Maree O'Connor as Head of Responsible Investment has been welcomed by leading Socially Responsible finance organization, Prometheus Ethical Finance.

“It’s good to see the NZ Super Fund taking such a strong lead on Responsible Investment and appointing someone with Anne-Maree’s strong experience in this field,” said Prometheus director, Terry Creighton.

“This is an important next step following the Super Fund’s decision earlier this year to be one of the founding signatories to the UN Principles for Responsible Investment and signals that they are serious about that undertaking,” Mr Creighton asserted.

“The Millenium Ecosystem Assessment and the recent Stern Report have both highlighted the significance of environmental risks to economic performance and so it is good to see the Super Fund taking such a clear public stance in favour of integrating environmental and other risk factors into their investment approach”, he continued.

“The Sustainable and Responsible Investment sector has been the fastest growing investment segment in the UK and the US over the past decade and a half because of the recognition of the role of environment, social and governance risks to corporate performance”, Mr Creighton argued.

“The lead taken by the NZ Super Fund may well stimulate commensurate growth in that market segment in New Zealand,” he concluded.
