Industrial action could threaten KiwiSaver support
Retirement saving is too important an issue to be compromised by industrial action, says Business NZ.
EPMU plans to “fight” for employer contributions to KiwiSaver, along with wage increases, as part of its 2007 wage campaign.
Business NZ Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly says this could be disastrous for KiwiSaver.
“The Government consulted carefully to gain widespread support for KiwiSaver as a voluntary scheme, and employers agreed to help administer it on that basis.
“Now EPMU is seeking to tie KiwiSaver contributions into its 2007 wage campaign, accompanied by statements about making KiwiSaver compulsory.
“The problem is that the new campaign is very like EPMU’s last campaign, 5% in ’05, which was based on actual and threatened strike action.
“If any employer’s commitment to KiwiSaver was undermined by industrial action, this would be a totally unfortunate consequence.”
