TVNZ Announces New Channel Names
TVNZ's two new digital channels will be called TVNZ 6 and TVNZ 7.
The two new channels will be broadcast on the Freeview digital platform, with TVNZ 6 launching in late September this year and TVNZ 7 launching in March 2008.
TVNZ's General Manager of Digital Services Eric Kearley said the names were chosen because of the channels' positions on the Freeview electronic programme guide.
"We also chose numeric names to reflect the wide range of content both will screen. If they were channels with a limited or narrow range of content then more descriptive names would have been appropriate," he said.
TVNZ 6 will be the first of the new channels and will carry around 70% local content. The programming will be divided into three different services with three distinct content offerings.
The morning and daytime service will show programming for pre-school children. From late afternoon until the evening the second service will provide safe, entertaining and educational programming suitable for shared family viewing. Then, at 8.30pm the third service will show more challenging programming centred on the arts and drama.
A full announcement of the programme schedule for TVNZ 6 will be made in July.
TVNZ 7 is a broad-based factual channel that will launch in March 2008. It will carry news on the hour every hour, documentaries, sports and current affairs programming.
