Faster Customs clearance plan backed
Customs' investment plans for a major computer upgrade will speed up importing and exporting procedures, and cross border passenger flow, and is excellent news, says Bruce Goldsworthy, Manager for Manufacturing Services for the Employers & Manufacturers Association (Northern).
"Today's announcement that Government has allocated the Customs Department $1.1 million to prepare detailed design and costings to upgrade its computer system, 'CusMod', is timely," Mr Goldsworthy said.
"Business backs this scoping exercise in expectation of a full Budget allocation next year to undertake the work required.
"The CusMod system was developed in 1997 at a cost of $22 million with Cusmod II expected to cost much more.
"The plan to integrate aspects of Customs, Agriculture & Fish and the NZ Food Safety Authority plus other departments into a single entry for customs clearance would avoid duplication of IT systems and procedures while making the movement of goods faster and easier.
"Business wants the work to proceed as soon as possible to give New Zealand traders the efficiencies needed to operate successfully in global markets."
