The 2007 THORPE-Bowker New Zealand Book
Industry Awards, were announced at the annual New Zealand
book awards dinner tonight at SKYCITY, Auckland.
The awards celebrate outstanding achievement in New Zealand bookselling and publishing and are voted on by booksellers and publishers across the country. They were presented alongside the Spectrum Print Book Design Awards and the Nielsen BookData New Zealand Booksellers’ Choice Award.
The winning book shops were:
* The THORPE-Bowker
Independent Bookshop of the Year Award
Books A Plenty in
Tauranga, owned and operated by Chris and Warren
Baskett.
* The THORPE-Bowker Group Bookshop
Award
Dymocks Booksellers Lambton Quay in Wellington and
Borders in Auckland (joint winners).
* The THORPE-Bowker
Regional Bookseller of the Year:
University Book Shop
(Otago) Ltd, in Dunedin.
In announcing the bookselling awards, THORPE-Bowker publisher Andrew Wilkins emphasised the role the awards played in reminding New Zealanders of the importance of book shops to the New Zealand community.
‘Whether you’re an adult or a child, There are some experiences you simply can’t replicate online, and the tactile joy of browsing in your local bookshop, and getting on first-name terms with your local bookseller, is undoubtedly one of them,’ he told the sell-out audience of industry heavyweights and authors.
The publisher awards were dominated by one company—Random House New Zealand—which won every award available.
