NZ House & Garden unveils stunning renovation

Press Release 18 April 2008

NZ House & Garden unveils stunning renovation

The magazine known as a source of inspiration for home life and the catalyst for many a home renovation has undergone a refurbishment of its own.

The stunning new look NZ House & Garden is unveiled in the magazine’s May issue – revealing a major reinvigoration of New Zealand’s leading lifestyle title.

The magazine has a fresh new look, welcomes a number of exciting new contributors and introduces a whole new section — HOME LIFE — that encourages readers to add an extra creative ‘zip’ to their homes and lives.

Editorial Director Michal McKay says following a reader survey and review of the magazine late last year NZ House & Garden has been reinvigorated to stay abreast of market trends.

“As with any refurbishment, what started out as a minor redo turned into a major refit,” she says. “First you change the cushions, then the walls need a paint… before your know it you’ve decided on the entire house needs a complete overhaul.”

“The May issue is a result. We’ve swapped features around, given a bit more space here, a little less there, moved sections and introduced a whole new one as well as adding a new masthead. Along with our talented regulars we’ve also gained some wonderful new contributors to help shape our fresh format,” she says.

The fabric of the magazine remains very much the same. For over 14 years, New Zealanders have relied on NZ House & Garden to provide a window into the lives, homes and gardens of everyday New Zealanders as an inspiration for their own home life. This spirit of suggestion is woven into every page of the new look magazine.

The magazine’s exciting new section HOME LIFE whets the imagination with creative ideas for the home, says Michal.

“Each month we feature an eclectic mix of homes. New Zealanders have a very diverse sense of style — our lifestyles and personalities greatly influence our home life and our home space should be an expression of ourselves. Encouraging readers’ creativity and helping to add a unique point of difference to their homes, is what HOME LIFE is all about,” says Michal.

Wrapped up within HOME LIFE, Hand Made provides ideas for acquiring new skills and creating a real sense of self-satisfaction through contemporary handmade craft. Home Hints offers domestic tips on how to master the art of keeping your home beautiful. Solutions concentrates on helpful hints for making the most of space within the home, and Season’s Pickings offers full latitude to anyone with a trace of a green finger.

In the May issue, Hand Made shows how something as simple as a tea towel can be so much more than a tool for drying dishes – it could be inspiration for a doll, apron or even wall art. To help with the transformation, each Hand Made feature is accompanied by an easy step-by-step guide on how to do it yourself.

The face behind Home Hints is domestic guru and personality Shannon Lush. In her first column, Shannon shares her wisdom on how to use scent to enhance your home, disguise unwanted smells, deter household nasties like mould, and to match the perfect fragrance to each room.

A host of other new contributors join the NZ House & Garden team, including garden expert Rose Thodey as the new Gardens Editor and wine aficionado Yvonne Marie-Lorkin who will delve into the wonderful world of wine each month and profile passionate winemakers from around the country in Cellar Door.

Another enhanced section is the monthly special feature, which has been expanded to provide even more insight into key areas of the home and garden. May sets the temperature with a stylish but practical take on warming up your home for winter with advice on heating each room.

The popular Entertaining section will continue to provide delicious ideas for bringing together family and friends at home with delicious recipes, easy step-by-step guides and ideas for setting the scene.

Looking for adventures closer to home, Travel will explore destinations that excite and appeal as ideal places to get away from it all. In May, the Akaroa Walk in the Banks Peninsula provides the spectacular backdrop for a three-day tramp.

Reader favourites such as My Favourite Room, Down to Earth, A Certain Style and many more regular features have undergone slight facelifts but are still bound into the fabric of the magazine.

“Readers tell us how much they enjoy these regular features and insights into New Zealanders’ lives and we continue our commitment to seeking out the most interesting, quirky and fascinating and showcasing them in the magazine each month,” says Michal.

The new look NZ House & Garden is on sale from Monday 21 April, packed with ideas to inspire home life and celebrate Mother’s Day.
