WCC Targets “Olympics Of Print”

A goal of competing for Pride In Print Awards is now being formally expressed in the printing request for tenders (RFTs) issued by the Wellington City Council (WCC).

Spurred on by Pride In Print success in 2005 and 2006, the council first included the Awards reference when issuing a tender for its $1.3 million annual print spend the following year, explains WCC Publication and Design Unit Print Manager Craig Campbell.

“We believe it is a way of ensuring that the printers are up to a sufficient standard to warrant inclusion in the criteria in deciding who to include in the short listing to RFT process,” he says.

“A question was asked in the RFT: ‘The Council have a policy where at least two publications should be put forward for a Pride In Print Award each year. How would you assist the Council in achieving this policy and more importantly assist them in winning this award?"

“A following question was: ‘With the above policy and assistance from you, the Council has succeeded in winning a gold medal in the latest PIP. How are you going to celebrate the success with the Council in your joint venture?"

Mr Campbell says the WCC hopes to soon add to the three Gold Medals and two Highly Commendeds earned to date.

“The positives are the prestige that go with winning gold anywhere, Olympics or World Champs and we see Pride In Print as the Olympics of print. It's great for staff to be recognised for the high standard of their work.

“Early planning is essential -- it needs to be identified at a job's inception or design stage whether it should be put forward for an award so that there is sufficient time for extra effort or embellishments.

“Wellington City Council is an innovative and creative organisation. We like to partner with organisations who can provide innovative and creative solutions that meet our needs.”
