Subway Guy And His “Fat Pants” To Hit New Zealand

The man who gained celebrity status by eating SUBWAY® sandwiches and losing over 100kg is coming to New Zealand.

Jared Fogle has been SUBWAY’s main spokesman since 1998 after becoming famous as the college guy who lost around 110kg eating SUBWAY® sandwiches everyday and exercising.

To celebrate Jared maintaining a healthy weight for 10 years, SUBWAY® is hitting the road on a 3-city tour to promote the SUBWAY® School Lunch Programme. The tour will take in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, making stops at schools, SUBWAY® stores and meeting Subcard members and franchisees.

Along the way Jared will be doing a series of interviews with radio, television, newspapers and magazines. People will have the chance to have their photo taken with Jared and the other star of the tour – his world famous 60-inch “fat pants”. The pants, a reminder of the days when he tipped the scales at nearly 200kg, will be “hung up” and retired to an advertising museum set to open in the US next year.

Besides recounting the story of his remarkable weight loss, and celebrating 10 years as spokesman for one of the world’s most successful franchises, Jared will be showing his support for the SUBWAY® School Lunch Programme.

SUBWAY’s School Lunch Programme, an initiative unique to SUBWAY® New Zealand, falls under the “everyday” rating of the Ministry of Health Food and Beverage Classification System. The recently introduced system classifies food and drink sold in schools into three categories in a bid to encourage consumption of healthy food. The School Lunch Programme offers schools a range of low-fat SUBWAY® sandwiches that schools can order and have delivered each week.

“The lunch programme offers schools a healthier alternative that can be enjoyed regularly by children,” says SUBWAY® development agent Mark Rutherglen. “The feedback we’ve had from schools has been very positive. Kids look forward to it as do the teachers as they like the ease and convenience of having fresh ready-made sandwiches delivered.”

Today Jared juggles a career of motivational talks to school children, media commitments as well as fronting The Jared Foundation, a charity he founded to educate children and parents about the importance of healthy nutrition and exercise. The Foundation provides programmes for children ages 6 to 14 years and support tools for parents, educators and health care professionals to encourage and sustain lifestyle changes.
