Sorted Architecture Wins Two Awards For Te Anau Airport Building

The 2008 ADNZ/Resene Awards ended with a double whammy win for Wanaka practice Sorted Architecture. Founding partner Steve Humpherson took the top accolade in the Commercial/Industrial Design category for the Te Anau Airport at Manapouri, also claiming the Special Projects Award for 3D renderings of the terminal building.

Inaugurated in April 2008 by Sir Tim Wallis, the Te Anau Airport at Manapouri was inspired by the aviation history of deer recovery in the region. Combining tradition and modernity, its rural shed aesthetics were designed to enhance passengers’ travel experience by giving them a sense of the area’s heritage.

With a construction cost of $1.6 million, the terminal was also built to be as energy efficient and environmental-friendly as possible, boasting insulation well above code standards, high level opening windows for passive ventilation, Northern glazing for passive solar gain, corrugated clad water tanks to collect roof rainwater and locally sourced timbers and stone.

The ADNZ/Resene Awards judges commented that “The Te Anau Airport at Manapouri achieved a memorable and rewarding enhancement to the site, with a confident and elegant orchestration of vernacular materials and forms.”

Following his ADNZ/Resene Awards wins, Steve Humpherson of Sorted Architecture said: “It’s great for us to win the Commercial/Industrial Design Award because people might not know about this side of our work. We’ve been mostly associated with residential projects, even though we’ve been designing commercial buildings for a long time.”

“The Special Project Award highlights the power of 3D computer renderings. Our images of the Te Anau Airport terminal were rendered in Archicad with the background added using Photoshop. 3D illustrations are fantastic tools which can help clients save money by enabling them to visualize and understand key aspects of a building, including features and flow through, before giving their go ahead.”

About Steve Humpherson

Steve is the founding partner of Sorted Architecture. With twenty years’ experience in the architectural business, he started his career as a draughting technician with Bulleyment Fortune Architects, before joining Designscope in Wellington where he cut his teeth on a variety of projects for three years.

Steve’s next step was to set up his own practice, Sorted Architecture in Wanaka, where he has since worked to create some of the area’s finest homes. The residence designed for international air pilot and Red Devil leader Ray Hanna on the Wanaka lakeshore recently sold for circa $9m. Steve’s project for The Humphreys’ dwelling not only won an ADNZ Regional award in 2005, but also graced the cover of Trends magazine. The Robertsons’ building - a 1000sqm residence was another of architectural achievement. Featuring ample guest accommodation, it was built using recycled materials as per its owners’request, with outstanding results. Over the years, Steve has acquired extensive experience designing private dwellings with construction budgets over $1m. He has also worked on a wide range of commercial developments.
