Campervan bookings affected by threat of crime

Campervan bookings affected by threat of crime

"The negative press that has surrounded the attack on the Dutch tourists in Southland last week is already affecting tourism," says Tim Alpe, CEO of JUCY Group, one of NZ's fastest growing camper and car rental companies.

"We have had a handful of bookings for campervans be cancelled by Dutch tourists in the past week not because of economic conditions but citing their concern over crime and safety

"I think the offenders should be hit twice as hard when they target a tourist because it has such an impact on our country. So many kiwis rely on tourism for jobs and when the Dutch Government adds a heading 'Serious Crime' to its travel advice page its time that the Government got really serious about cracking down on these thugs who think tourists are a soft target.

"One of the great things that New Zealand has always been able to boast is that you can park by any river, lake or scenic spot and stay the night in safety. It's a tragedy when a few criminals ruin it for everyone.

"We are encouraging our customers to use camp grounds but if they are going to 'freedom camp where there aren't a lot of people then don't open doors at night; park so you can drive off easily and note any suspicious activity.

"It's hard enough with tourism numbers being down without having to worry that criminals are denting your industry. We need Tourism New Zealand and the Government to reassure the Dutch Government that we are a safe place to visit and like anywhere in the world - be careful and be aware, ended Mr Alpe."
