Power blackout an untimely blow for
business
Today’s power blackout across Auckland’s eastern suburbs could not have come at a worse time for business, says Cameron Brewer, head of the Newmarket Business Association.
“It was set to be a big day for Newmarket, but the rung was pulled out from under us. The weather had brought people out, as had the many sales, and with kids back in school the mums were out as well. It’s a blow for many businesses particularly given we’re in the third quarter of a major recession. It does nothing for morale.
“When you consider everything from wasted restaurant meals, employees unable to work, wiped computer documents, and missed electronic sales, the cost would have to be several million.
“Having a secure electricity supply is absolutely critical for business. Given the cost of power, business now deserves a full explanation. We got plenty of assurances after the 12 June 2006 Auckland power blackout that maintenance would be improved and risk would be spread.”
“We were delighted that Newmarket was treated by Vector as a priority and had its power restored after about 90 minutes. It could have been much worse and serves as a timely reminder to the National Government as it prepares to release its infrastructural plans.”
