Recruitment industry follows US trend.
Challenging times in the recruitment industry has seen an unprecedented increase in networking activity by recruitment agencies says Peter Fowler, managing director of Rec Radar Limited.
Mr Fowler says that more than 2 agencies a day have been joining the Rec Radar network since Christmas compared to 1 or 2 per week last year. Rec Radar is an online global portal for recruitment agencies to split recruiting fees by sharing candidates and job vacancies.
He adds that a growing focus on technology has become apparent as agencies look to become more efficient in order to maximise opportunities in what he calls challenging times for the industry. Fowler says that while the New Zealand and Australian agencies are slowly adapting to the idea of inter-company sharing the USA market has quickly adopted fee splitting as a way to survive and flourish in a depressed job market. He says that while previously recruiters may have looked to maintain exclusivity with candidates or vacancies the current trend is that half a fee is much better than no fee at all.
Advice from Mr Fowler for agencies and employers is that recruiting in 2009 will all be about working smarter, not necessarily harder. “There are only so many jobs to work on and as our American members are showing, technology such as automatic CV loaders and networking tools can actually grow business at a time when the reverse should be happening”
