Trinity Hill Wins Two Trophies for Tempranillo

Trinity Hill Wins Two Trophies in a Row for Tempranillo

HAWKE’S BAY, Tuesday 24 March 2009:  A New Zealand red wine has won two prestigious trophies in a row during the last six months, with its latest at the 2009 Royal Easter Wine Show.

Trinity Hill’s Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Tempranillo 2007 won the Champion Wine of Other Varieties trophy, awarded in the weekend.  Their Montepulciano 2008 also won a gold medal.

Trinity Hill wine maker John Hancock says the Tempranillo is an awards-magnet, winning a gold medal and trophy at the Air New Zealand Awards in November, as well as receiving a prestigious Blue-Gold award at the Sydney International Wine Competition.

“It has won awards every year since its release seven years ago.  Awards are hugely important to communicating to consumers the prestige of a wine as it gives them the reassurance that they are purchasing a quality wine they can trust.  This is vital with a new variety such as Tempranillo,” says Hancock.

Tempranillo is grown in the stony, free-draining and warm soils of the Gimblett Gravels..

Hancock says they are focusing on establishing new export markets for this special wine.  “We are now exporting our Tempranillo to four countries including China, UK, Australia and Brazil,” says Hancock.

The 2007 Tempranillo is an elegant wine, with firm but not heavy tannin structure. The texture is silky, but with substance, almost like a combination of Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The awards are recognition of the success of this fascinating variety in the unique terroir of the Gimblett Gravels, and because Tempranillo ripens early the opportunity for consistent high quality from year to year is an absolute reality.

Judging of the 2009 Royal Easter Wine Show was under the guidance and supervision of long-serving chairman of judges, Bob Campbell MW, and his deputies, the highly respected Australian judge, Mike DeGaris, and Hawkes Bay judge and winemaker, Kate Radburnd.
