Revised painting of buildings preparation Standard

Standards New Zealand Media Release

3 June 2009

Revised painting of buildings preparation Standard published

Standards New Zealand has published a revised Standard, Guide to the painting of buildings, AS/NZS 2311:2009, to update and replace the 2002 version.

The Standard helps those with interest in building design and maintenance – such as trades people, architects, builders, or building owners – in the preparation of painting specifications for inclusion in contracts.

Painting is an accepted method of protecting materials. Managing the preparation of painting and repainting processes in an effective and systematic way can help ensure the painting result is of a superior quality. It can also ensure the right paint protection is applied to extend the life of painted surfaces and enhance the appearance of painted items.

AS/NZS 2311:2009:

- has been revised to update practices, procedures, and modern paint types

- provides guidance and recommended good practice for the design, application, and maintenance of decorative paint systems in the development of painting specifications

- gives choices of paint types for use in different areas.

AS/NZS 2311:2009 can be referred to when specifying the necessary preparation, coating system, and the methods and conditions of application. This Standard can not be nominated as a painting specification, but it can be used as a basis for the preparation of appropriate paint specifications to suit individual contracts.
