Launching Eastbay Timebank

Press Release -

Launching Eastbay Timebank

Something wonderful is about to begin in Whakatane, something that has the power to improve the quality of life for people in the Eastern Bay.

Eastbay Timebank is launching on Saturday at the old Briscoes building from 10am – 2pm. Timebanking is a way of trading in time instead of money. An hour spent helping someone in your community earns you one Time Credit, which can then be used in exchange for someone doing something for you.

When dollars are tight but you have spare time, Time Banking is a great way to help others out and also get rewarded for your efforts. We have a fantastic local co-ordinator to keep the system running smoothly and an international website that has been effective in creating social change in 22 countries and 6 continents. Time Banks change neighborhoods and whole communities by unlocking human resources.

We all have something to offer; relationships, time, energy, knowledge and skills. By tapping into our human abundance of these things, Time Banks are able to help people to build better communities, and make progress towards environmental sustainability.

“The new wealth of time” is a report from the New Economics Foundation, which shows how timebanking can help give people more control over their lives, and grow our ability to care for and support each other. You can find the report on the Eastbay TimeBank website - www.eastbaytimebank.orgnz

TimeBanking is free and fun. We have the opportunity to be among the first people in New Zealand to experience Timebanking at the Launch this Saturday. Join in at the old Briscoes Building - between New World and The Warehouse - in Whakatane from 10am – 2pm. The area serviced by this Eastbay Timebank includes all areas of the Eastern Bay of Plenty, including Opotiki. As each town embraces the idea of trading time the individual communities will benefit, as well as the Eastern Bay as a whole.

The launch will have activities for children, live entertainment and art & crafts, as well as a chance to find out about other local community organisations. Trading on the day will not only give you an idea how TimeBanking works, but you can also earn time credits! Launch Credits are being given out to use in a ‘Celebrity Time Auction’. Some ‘world famous in Whakatane’ high-profile members of the community have offered an hour of their time for you to bid for. You won’t need any money - all you have to bring is your time. Refreshments will be also be available, so make a day of it and be inspired.

When the Timebank has built a solid foundation of members of all ages and stages, it will become a valueable resource for improving our community and giving value to participants.
