Finalists in New Zealand’s premier building awards

Media release
3 September 2009

Finalists in New Zealand’s premier building awards announced

National finalists have been announced in the Registered Master Builders 2009 House of the Year and RMB Commercial Project Awards, in association with PlaceMakers.

100 Gold Reserve finalists represent the best of more than 550 entrants in 20 regional competitions held throughout the New Zealand during June, July and August.

With principal sponsor PlaceMakers, the competition is in its 19th year and awards excellence in workmanship by Registered Master Builders throughout the country.

These finalists will now vie for New Zealand’s top two building honours – the 2009 House of the Year (winner of the PlaceMakers Supreme Award), and the RMB Commercial Project of the Year. These supreme titles, together with category and Lifestyle Award winners will be announced at a black-tie gala dinner in Auckland on 14 November.

Registered Master Builders Federation chief executive Warwick Quinn says 2009 has seen incredible levels of competition from around New Zealand.

“Every year the bar is raised. While there has been less building in the last 12 months during the recession, these awards demonstrate the incredible quality of work that has been completed over the past two years,” Warwick says.

“It is clear that customers – whether renovating, building new homes or commercial buildings – continue to stay focussed on quality in construction, attention to detail and excellence in design.”

PlaceMakers chief executive John Beveridge also acknowledges the high standard which entrants have to achieve to make gold reserve.

“What we build and how we build helps define us. Our houses and buildings tell visitors what’s important to us,” John says.

“This year’s gold reserve finalists have created buildings their owners can be proud of, as well as the rest of New Zealand. It is inspiring to see the finest work assembled as one, and recognised as the best.”

The finalists’ properties will be judged during September and October.

The House of the Year and RMB Commercial Project Awards are made possible through the support of principal sponsor PlaceMakers and supporting sponsors James Hardie, GIB Living Solutions®, Pink® Batts® Ultra® (Tasman Insulation), Housing New Zealand Corporation, Nulook, the Department of Building and Housing and Meridian.

About the Registered Master Builders 2009 House of the Year and RMB Commercial Project Awards, in association with PlaceMakers

The competition is structured on two levels – regional and national. Gold, Silver and Bronze Award-winners are determined using a points-based system. These award-winners are announced at 20 regional events around New Zealand throughout June, July and August.

The top 100 local Gold Award winners become national finalists, announced early September. These national finalists are then re-judged by a different panel of judges who determine the overall national winners.

The judging schedules are finalised in April with the first round of regional judging to commence in May.

The national winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Saturday 14 November at the SKYCITY Convention Centre, Auckland.
