Martinborough’s top pinot noirs “stunning”

Taking four out of five top scores in a tasting of premium pinot noir, Martinborough has once again “accentuated its status as New Zealand’s leading pinot noir region”, according to Grill magazine.

The tasting concluded “Top pinot noirs are stunning, Martinborough’s in particular”.

Grill magazine’s wine panel tasted 31 wines from the 2007 vintage. The four Martinborough wines in the top five scored 9 of a possible 10, “reflecting the exceptional overall standard”.

The wineries were Martinborough Vineyard, Ata Rangi, Dry River, and Escarpment: all heavyweight producers from the premium boutique wine village that consistently delivers style and quality far exceeding its size.

“As Martinborough produces less than one percent of New Zealand’s wines, this is a fantastic endorsement,” said Wines from Martinborough General Manager Rachael Fletcher.

“It reinforces perceptions of Martinborough as the “burgundy of the new world”, sharing a similarly cool climate and soil structure and boutique style of winemaking to produce world class pinot noir.

“The judges noted that the Martinborough wines will age well, and commented on their fragrance, elegance, harmony and complexity,” she said.

Judges Sam Kim and Ben Dugdale commented that the Martinborough wines showed “a richness and depth of flavour and character above the rest”. The best wines showed “elements of panache and individuality that added to their quality”.
