CIGNA Achieves New Zealand First For Information Security

Leading life and disability insurance company CIGNA has been awarded an international certification for information security management, making it the only financial services company in New Zealand to receive this accreditation, and providing its customers with peace of mind about the security of their personal information.

The ISO/IEC 27001 certification, awarded by BSI Management Systems Australia and New Zealand, is regarded as the premier standard for information security management internationally. The certification is designed to protect information assets and provide confidence to an organisation’s customers.

CIGNA New Zealand’s Chief Operating Officer Mike Grenfell says it applied for certification because of the sensitive information it managed on its clients’ behalf. “Most New Zealanders are concerned about their personal information. Knowing a company they share private details with is taking extra steps to protect their information is extremely important to them.

“We take the security and protection of our data systems very seriously. As a leading life insurance provider in New Zealand, with more than 275,000 people on our books, we are sitting on a wealth of data,” he says.

The ISP/IEC 27001 standard adopts a process approach for establishing, implementing, operating, monitoring, reviewing, maintaining and improving information security management systems.

BSI Management Systems is at the forefront of certification of management systems, providing assessment, certification and training services. ISO/IEC 27001 is based on, and replaces, the internationally recognised British Standard BS 7799 and aligns with the OECD guidelines for implementing information security.
