New magazine for independent travellers

New magazine for independent travellers

Indie Travel Media Ltd, which enjoys an international standing for its long-running Indie Travel Podcast, is extending its services to offer a quarterly travel magazine. This is available on annual subscription in print format, with medium-resolution PDF and flipbook digital versions offered online.

The first edition was published on September 1. It will be followed by further magazines in December, February and June.

“The Indie Travel Podcast Magazine brings a fresh breath to travel periodicals by finding new angles on popular destinations while exposing less traditional places to the spotlight,” says co-publisher Craig Martin, managing director of Indie Travel Media.

Editorial priorities include worldwide destination features, an independent and adventure travel focus, photo-essays from emerging travel photographers, and coverage of current political, environmental and cultural issues in travel.

“We are confident the magazine will appeal to readers’ sense of style, as well as their wanderlust and intellect,” says Martin.

Craig and co-publisher Linda Martin epitomise their target market. While they are currently based in Auckland, New Zealand, their publishing operation is location-independent. They travel extensively and will continue to produce multi-modal publications from around the world.

Craig Martin says that the new magazine “draws on experienced travel writers and editors, alongside vibrant voices from online publications”.

In the first issue, travel writer Ben Cooper shares a fresh taste of Seville with his article on tapeando, Lola Akinmade’s photography delivers a perspective of Lagos and an insight to Burma’s political issues is offered in a very personal report from Tim Patterson and Ryan Libre.

These are presented in a novel A5 format, along with other destination stories. Regular features will include a worldwide festivals round-up, pull-out guide and columns on health (Erik McLaughlin), women’s travel (Kim Mance) and digital nomads (Christine Gilbert).

“New media delivery mechanisms will still be used in distributing the magazine, especially the seldom-used PDF functionality of iTunes,” Martin explains. “With an existing global audience of podcast listeners, the digital magazine can be instantly delivered through RSS technologies.”

Subscriptions for the print version of Indie Travel Podcast Magazine cost NZ$40. These can be arranged through the magazine’s website: http://indietravelpodcast.com/magazine

The Martins’ Indie Travel Podcast has traditionally focused on cutting edge new media publishing, especially audio downloads. It has grown to include travel video and stories on their Lonely Planet award-winning site, http://indietravelpodcast.com.

“In all its forms, the Indie Travel Podcast caters for independent travellers, especially those planning or taking part in extended travel,” says Craig Martin. “The magazine allows themes to be treated in greater depth and beautiful photography, and graphic design to be showcased in a familiar format.”
