TAB on track for record turnover on Melbourne Cup
Kiwis are getting right behind the excitement of the Melbourne Cup with the New Zealand TAB on track to do a record turnover on the race.
As at 3pm today, turnover on the New Zealand TAB tote was at $3.8 million for the Melbourne Cup race itself, which is the highest ever level recorded at that time of the day on race day.
“Turnover is up 6.9 per cent on the same time last year but betting really reaches fever pitch in the hour leading up to the race,” says TAB Racing Manager Michael Dore.
“Last year, more than 40 per cent of the total turnover on the Melbourne Cup race itself was done in the final hour leading up to the race,” he adds.
“In total, Kiwis bet $7.6 million on the Melbourne Cup race last year and we look like we are on track to break the record of 2005 when nearly $8.1 million was bet on the race,” Mr Dore says.
“In terms of interest in the Kiwi horses, Daffodil is definitely favourite with the Kiwi punters but there has also been a bit of money put on Spin Around as a bit of a roughie.”
