India NZ Business Council To Launch New Chapter

Press Release for Thursday 26 November

India New Zealand Business Council to Launch Christchurch Chapter

The India New Zealand Business Council will today launch its first-ever chapter in Christchurch.

“While the Council has been in operation for 21 years, and has always had some members in the Christchurch area, this step represents an effort to increase our activities in the Garden City,” says Wenceslaus Anthony, the Chairperson of the Council.

The Council recently appointed Sir Richard Hadlee, as well-known in India as in New Zealand, as its Patron. His appointment seemed the ideal time for the Council to also launch a Christchurch chapter.

Mr Anthony said that well-known local businessman, and experienced exporter to India, Mr Robert Barker, will be the leader of the new chapter.

“Exports to India have increased dramatically in the past two years”, says Mr Anthony, “with much of that increase coming from coal, milk powder and logs from South Island areas. But many of the hi-tech industries in and around Christchurch also have an interest in the Indian market. One of them, Jade Software Corporation, will be giving a presentation to our members and friends as part of the launch process this evening.”

The chairperson said that with negotiations soon to start towards a free trade agreement between the two countries, and with India’s growth rate having recovered quickly from the economic recession, the Council has noticed a much increased level of interest amongst New Zealand companies in the Indian market.

Through our new chapter in Christchurch we aim to provide more frequent opportunities for companies in this region to obtain information about that market.”
