Local tourism initiative makes an international splash
A small kiwi organisation’s work promoting
responsible tourism in the Pacific has been having an impact
internationally, and has recently been nominated for a major
international tourism award.
Developed by non-profit organisation Global Focus Aotearoa, the Responsible Tourism Code for the Pacific is one of only four nominations in the World Travel Awards for responsible tourism in Australasia.
The Responsible Tourism Code for the Pacific lays out six clear guidelines for having a positive local impact as a visitor to the Pacific.
“The World Travel Awards, described as ‘the Oscars of the travel industry’, typically focus on the heavyweights in the travel industry, so it’s a big achievement for the Responsible Tourism Code for the Pacific to be recognised,” says Global Focus’ Information Advisor, Elena Wrelton.
“This nomination further verifies that the Responsible Tourism Code for the Pacific has become a major tool in improving tourism outcomes by helping people make environmentally friendly, ethical and respectful choices when travelling in the Pacific,” says Ms Wrelton.
“To give just one example, a key issue in tourism is making sure the economic benefits stay in local communities. By advising tourists how to buy locally and ethically, the Code helps tourists do their bit to make sure their visit has a positive economic and environmental impact”.
The Code is supported by local operators across the Pacific region as well as by major international tourism operators, such as Jasons Travel Media, Harvey World Travel, STA Travel, and GO Holidays.
