New Week, New Awards for Auckland Designers

New Week, New International Awards for Auckland Based Design Company

What do wine, climate change and a dance company have in common? Not much, unless you’re Auckland based design firm Alt Group, who this week added three more international awards to their burgeoning trophy cabinet thanks to their designs for these three disparate things.

Auckland based multidisciplinary design company, Alt Group, continued to take the international design world by storm this week, with their designs picking up accolades in the illustrious Graphis 2011 Poster Annual and I.D’s 2010 Annual Design Review competitions in New York.

Two golds were awarded to the company at Graphis’ 2011 Poster Annual competition - an international design contest that celebrates the best poster designs of the year from around the globe - for the company’s Black Grace Gathering Clouds poster and OUCH, a holey poster designed to draw attention to the issue of climate change.

Already this year, OUCH, a poster created using the sun’s harsh rays and magnifying glasses to burn the words ‘OUCH’ into paper, has won the company a number of international design awards including a Tokyo Type Directors Club award and New York Type Directors Club TDC56 award, with their poster for Auckland contemporary dance company, Black Grace, picking up a slew of prizes at last year’s national BeST Design Awards.

The Vigneron Centenary Magnum - a very personal project designed to celebrate the 100 year’s of Alt Group director, Ben Corban’s grandfather, Najib Corban of the Corban’s wine dynasty - was the third project to win the company metal this week, taking home a Design Distinction in the I.D 2010 Annual Design Review - America’s largest and most prestigious juried design competition, whose past winners include renowned innovators such as Apple, Nike and Kodak.

The three recent wins come just a week after the 17 strong Ponsonby based design studio was awarded a Merit at the Art Directors Club Awards in New York, and a month after the company was named Australasian Design Agency of the Year at Australian CREATIVE’s Hotshop Awards.
