Property Sales Raise Funds for Cancer Research

A Wellington real estate business is in the market for a cure for brain cancer – raising $50,000 for world leading cancer research facility the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research.

Just Paterson, which lost company co-founder Sally Paterson to Glioblastoma Multiforme - an aggressive form of brain cancer - last August, is helping fund the Malaghan Institute’s search for a vaccine against the disease.

The company launched a fundraising campaign dubbed ‘Blue September’ just a month after their director’s death with fundraising efforts including agent fee donations, company contributions and gifts from the community.

Just Paterson co-director Ian Paterson says wife Sally’s death highlighted the groundbreaking work the Malaghan Institute is doing and provided Sally’s family, colleagues and clients with an opportunity to create something good out of their loss.

“We’re committed to working long-term with the Malaghan Institute to support their bid for a vaccine for this particular form of brain tumour and we’re delighted to have reached our initial target of $50,000,” Ian Paterson says.

Malaghan Institute research Director Professor Graham Le Gros says “this kind of financial support is crucial to achieving our goals. It gives us the opportunity to undertake more cutting-edge research which has a better chance of making a big breakthrough.”

The Malaghan Institute is New Zealand’s leading medical research facility focused on finding cures for cancer, asthma, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and infectious disease. Based in Wellington the Institute currently has more than 60 full-time scientists carrying out cutting edge immunology research into the prevention and treatment of these devastating diseases.
