NZ firm delivering rail projects worldwide
NZ firm Motovated Design & Analysis Ltd. is delivering significant Rail projects worldwide.
Christchurch New Zealand: Motovated Design and Analysis has secured significant Rail industry orders over the past year, and is delivering added value to Rail clients worldwide. These Rail projects will help provide for asset expansion, rejuvenation and ongoing investments in local economies.
One significant order is for Global Locomotive (www.globallocomotive.com). This project involves the design and analysis of a containerised solution for the re-powering of older locomotives. “Containerisation” of the Prime Mover portion of a locomotive allows the latest technology diesel - electric solution to be utilised on a refurbished but older cab and chassis. This significantly reduces the upfront and mid-term costs of upgrading existing locomotives. Long term, the newer technology prime mover in re-powered locomotives can dramatically improve fuel efficiency, reduce noise and meet stricter emissions regulations.
The short term advantage comes from not having to completely upgrade all existing components, and the refurbishment of reused components can be minimised. The medium term savings are realised because a new cab and chassis can be purchased in 5 to 15 years and the containerised Prime Mover quickly transferred then, effectively creating a new locomotive.
Since this process can be staged it distributes the investment over 5 to 15 years. Since a significant portion of at least the initial refurbishment is carried out by local workshops, this technology supports and expands local infrastructure. While the concept has no immediate application in NZ, it is receiving significant interest in the Americas, the EU and Australia.
Mike Jacobs of Global Locomotive says, “We couldn’t have done this without Motovated. Other rail vendors worldwide provided timeframes in the order of 12 to 14 months and costs to suit, while Motovated provided a 12 to 14 week plan. They are currently on track, with costs an order of magnitude less than we first envisioned.” Greg Morehouse of Motovated (www.motovated.co.nz) says, “Motovated is privileged to help redefine some hugely important technologies. While it has been great to expand the rail knowledge within New Zealand, it is important that these new technologies will help extend the life of current rail assets while providing local jobs in economies worldwide.”
