Stockton Alliance offering 24 operator trainee positions to local people

Stockton Alliance has launched an operator trainee programme which will take on 24 local people over the next six months.

Up to four trainees a month will be taken on, with successful applicants starting in the workshop to learn first-hand the positive impact an operator can have on equipment if they look after it. They will also do some labouring to familiarise themselves with the mine. Formal training will be tied into unit standards and given in two skills – truck driving and one other.

Human Resources Manager, Malcolm Griffiths, says Stockton Alliance wants to provide opportunities for local people to develop modern mining skills. “We began promoting the operator traineeships through our workforce last week and we’ve already had a strong reaction. That’s very pleasing,” he says. “We are looking for people who live locally and have some life experience.

“They need to have the behaviours suited to the work, the physical capability to do the job and want to get into the industry. They will be offered a role if they successfully complete the six months of training and reach the required standard.”

Apprenticeships also available

Stockton Alliance is also advertising at least three apprenticeship positions, based at the Ngakawau facility, in three trade areas – electrical, light vehicle mechanics and maintenance and diagnostics. Mr Griffiths says that if there are enough suitable applicants, it is possible two apprentices will be taken on in one of the trade areas.
