New medical services acquisition

Medical services acquisition brings new string to First Assistance bow

Emergency assistance company First Assistance announced today the acquisition of medical repatriation service provider Universal Assistance.

First Assistance already delivers a comprehensive range of emergency assistance to its clients and partners, and the purchase brings an organisation delivering a complementary set of competencies and skills to the First Assistance family of services.

Universal Assistance is a New Zealand based repatriation company providing 24 hour assistance to those who become injured or ill overseas. It facilitates, from start to finish, the process of transferring and caring for patients in any part of the world – providing medical equipment, medical flight clearance and specialist doctors and intensive care nurses as medical escorts.

Founded by Dr Simon Barclay, Universal Assistance has been trading in New Zealand since 1990 and has partnered with First Assistance since 1992. Dr Barclay is the Medical Director at First Assistance and will remain in this role. Universal Assistance will continue to operate under its current brand and will retain its full contracted staff.

First Assistance General Manager Mary-Jo McDonald is enthusiastic about the acquisition and believes it will bring a lot of value to both organisations.

“The purchase is a mutually beneficial one for both First Assistance and Universal Assistance. It brings a new range of services under the First Assistance umbrella while at the same time providing Universal with an opportunity to grow their business through us,” says McDonald.

“The services delivered by both First Assistance and Universal Assistance are well aligned and a natural complement to one another. We feel that the synergy between the two organisations will lead to positive results across the board,” she says.

First Assistance provides a range of assistance products, working with clients around the world to assist their customers with travel and medical, automotive, property, claims and business issues. Specialists in their fields, First Assistance’s doctors, nurses, mechanics, insurance specialists, IT professionals and sales staff all bring understanding to each case they manage.
