Winners Of Greenstone Energy People Awards 2010

Contract manager Ant Rickard and trainee drainlayer Steven Davies have been named winners of the prestigious Greenstone Energy People Awards 2010.

The awards, organised by the New Zealand Contractors’ Federation, recognise outstanding achievements of individuals, below the age of 30, within the civil construction industry.

Ant, 28, from Christchurch, who works for Delta Utility Services, clinched the Leader of Tomorrow title, winning a trophy and $2,500 prize.

Judges praised Ant’s understanding of the industry, his strategic thinking, his successful work history, strong personal drive and ability to build a good rapport with stakeholders.

They also noted his excellent communication skills and the way he manages to balance his working life and ongoing study with his family commitments.

Ant, who is married with a young family, is studying part-time to complete the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering, the applied New Zealand Diploma in Engineering and a Bachelor of Engineering Technology.

Steven Davies, from Ohaupo, who works for Allens United Drainage & Earthworks in Hamilton, was named Trainee of the Year, winning a trophy and $1,500. Judges said he was a standout candidate in a strong field.

Since joining the company two years ago Steven has worked steadily to amass a wide range of qualifications and is currently studying for the NZ National Certificate in Drainlaying.

Judges for the Leader of Tomorrow Award were: Lead Judge Tenby Powell, founder of Hunter Powell Investments Ltd and Director of NZRG, comprising cornerstone business Hirepool, together with Henderson Rentals, Rhodes Rentals, Port-a-Loo, Barricading Solutions and Castles Marquee Hire; Barry Brosnahan, Greenstone Energy (formerly Shell) Commercial Fuels Key Account Manager Wellington and Charlie Taylor, past NZCF president and CEO of Taylor’s Contracting.

Judges for Trainee of the Year were Charlie Taylor and David Giddens of InfraTrain the ITO for the Civil Infrastructure Industry.

Judges visited all finalists and interviewed them in their workplace. In reaching a decision, they took into account work history and training record, personal presentation, attitude, verbal ability, understanding of questions and people interaction. Finalists were also expected to demonstrate their level of commitment to expanding their skills and knowledge and their contribution to their company.

The winners were announced at the Greenstone Energy lunch held at the New Zealand Contractors’ Federation’s annual conference in Nelson.
