ACT MP took dead baby’s identity for fake passport, says it was a ‘prank’
Sept. 15 (BusinessDesk) ACT Party MP David Garrett told Parliament today that he stole the identity of a dead baby and used it to obtain a fake passport.
The incident 26 years ago was a “prank,” said Garrett, who was discharged without conviction after admitting the offence.
He was arrested in 2005 when police began a probe into incidents where Israeli secret service agents used the same technique to get fake passports.
His statement on the passport scam comes days after revelations he was charged with assault, relating to a brawl in Tonga in 2002.
Garrett was the driving force behind the so-called three strikes legislation that ensures serious violent offenders get jail time after their third offence.
He said he got the idea to steal a dead baby’s identity from the novel Day of the Jackal. The passport expired without being used, he said.
