Receivers from PriceWaterhouseCoopers were appointed at 12:20pm today following a request from Pike River Coal Limited Board.
Receiver John Fisk said, " We are working with Pike River Management and Directors and getting an understanding of the business issues.
"Today we will be meeting with the families of the 29 men who lost their lives. Tomorrow morning we will meet staff.
"We are currently qualifying staff pay entitlements and we will be endeavoring to meet the regular payments as they fall due noting that a staff reduction programme has been initiated by the company."
Media are invited to attend a press conference tomorrow.
