The Business of Marine Energy

28 March 2011
AWATEA announces 5th Annual Conference on “The Business of Marine Energy”

The AWATEA Executive proudly announces AWATEA's 5th Annual conference to be held at Te Papa Tongarewa on Thursday and Friday 26 and 27 May 2011.

The theme of the conference will be "The Business of Marine Energy", to recognize the growing maturity of marine energy both internationally and here in New Zealand. The one-day conference will be followed by a half-day workshop on the "Projects at the Frontier" and a half-day field trip.

The one-day conference will follow AWATEA’s usual pattern with keynote speakers from Government and from international organizations. Presentations will cover a range of topics from Government policies, through device and project developments to more scientific topics. The Executive has issued a Call for Papers for the conference and workshop.

The second day of the conference will be split into a workshop, which will feature presentations from participants in active projects in marine energy. The second half of the day will involve a field trip to the West Wind farm near Makara to view Cook Strait. A registration form for all three events can be downloaded from the AWATEA website and student bursaries will be available again to enable students to attend at reduced prices.

The AWATEA Conference will be sponsored by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, Meridian Energy Limited and Power Projects Limited. A number of sponsorship packages are available and can be viewed on the AWATEA website.

The Executive is also planning to repeat the very successful Trade Exhibition, which it held at last year’s conference. Information on the Trade Exhibition, including an application form for display booths, is available on the AWATEA website.

With the successful grant to Crest of the consents for the Kaipara Harbour tidal project and the acquisition of consents by two wave projects, Chatham Islands Marine Energy and Wave Energy Technology – New Zealand, this is a good time to get an update on “The Business of Marine Energy”.
